Scrip Program

Frequently asked questions
Download a Scrip Form

Sacred Heart families participate in an ongoing Scrip program by purchasing gift cards through school. The gift cards can be used for routine purchases at grocery stores, restaurants, and stores. The school receives a percentage of each purchase and the family receives credit toward their Scrip requirement. After a family has earned $350, the rest is credited toward the year's tuition.

Many retailers are available. The order sheet lists many of the common ones, and a complete list is available at www.glscrip.com. The percentages listed on the order sheet show how much credit any given purchase will generate. For example, Giant Eagle offers 5 percent, so a $100 Giant Eagle gift card purchase generates $5 credit towards the family's Scrip requirement.

Orders are due each Monday at 8:30 a.m. Cards can be picked up or sent home with older students (5th grade or older) Thursday afternoon. We recommend that an adult pick up the order at the school office if at all possible.

Giant Eagle cards are also sold after the Saturday 6 p.m. and Sunday 9:30 a.m. Masses on weekends. If you buy cards at Mass, be sure to give the seller your name so your family gets credit for the purchase. During the summer and before Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, a schedule of order and pick-up dates will be provided.

Ten percent credit from Market Day orders also go towards a family’s Scrip requirement. Other promotions may also be offered; for instance, a 10 percent credit from the purchase of Heart of Pittsburgh I and II cookbooks is sometimes offered.

What is the Scrip assessment? Sacred Heart families participate in an ongoing Scrip program by purchasing gift cards through school. The gift cards can be used for routine purchases at grocery stores, restaurants, and retail stores. The school receives a percentage of each purchase and the family receives credit toward their Scrip assessment of $350. After a family has earned the required $350, the rest is credited towards their tuition or to another family “as needed.”

How is Scrip credit calculated? Each gift card has a percentage next to it on the order form. That percentage tells you how much credit that purchase will provide. For example, Giant Eagle gives 5 percent credit, so a $200 Giant Eagle gift card purchase gives you $10 in Scrip credit (5 percent of $200 is $10).

What if I don’t earn enough to cover it all?
The school will bill you at the end of March for the balance your scrip purchases have not covered.

What if I earn more than the assessment? You will receive it as a credit towards tuition or you can have the additional sum donated “as needed.”

Is there any other way (besides gift cards) that I can earn credit toward my assessment? Yes, 10 percent of Market Day purchases are applied towards your assessment as well as $2 from purchase of the Heart of Pittsburgh I or II cookbooks.

Do I have to participate? No, you can just pay the $350.

How long do I have to fulfill the Scrip assessment?
From April of the previous school year to March of the current school year.

What’s the benefit of participating? Families benefit by covering the $350 assessment simply by making purchases at stores you normally shop at.

How do I place an order? Forms are sent home every Thursday. Complete the form, enclose a check, and have your child turn it in before 8:30 a.m. Monday morning. Giant Eagle cards are also available after each Mass (be sure give the seller your name so you’ll get credit for the purchase). Gift cards are occasionally sold at school events such as conferences.  Any orders received in the office AFTER 8:30 a.m. on Monday will not be processed until the following week.

When and how will I get my completed order? Orders placed by 8:30 a.m. Monday morning are available Thursday afternoon in the office.  Orders can also be sent home (on Thursday) with students in 5th to 8th grade.

Do I have to order every week? How often can I order?
No, you can order every week or just every so often.  During the school year, orders are filled every week, except around some holidays and during a break in March (when annual totals are calculated).  You’ll be informed of any schedule changes by a note sent home. Orders can also be placed on designated dates throughout the summer.

Is there a minimum amount for each order?
No.

Does it cost anything to participate? Do we have to sell anything?
No

What is schedule for ordering?
Orders can be sent to school Monday morning with your child. As long as they turn them in before 8:30 a.m., they’ll be filled by Thursday afternoon.

What is deadline for covering the Scrip assessment?
Usually sometime in early March; an exact date will be sent home prior to the deadline.

Can I order every week?
Usually, although there are some schedule changes around holidays and a several-week break in March to count everything and set up to begin anew. Orders can also be placed every few weeks during the summer according to a schedule sent out at the end of the school year.

Can I order over the summer?
Yes, though not every week; a schedule will be sent home at the end of the school year.
